Sonoma Valley Library - “We had such a great drill. Clare drummed with her fists on a metal book cart, simulating a "rumble." I made an announcement, and everyone present participated -- young and old. We had one staff member and one volunteer under tables in opposite ends of the building. One staffer checked restroom and meeting room; another roamed the perimeter helping patrons. It was complete teamwork."

HOA Hans - Our SCOPE Leader in one of our senior communities, Chantarelle leads the disaster coordination for their HOA.  On 10/15, he did a display of Disaster Preparedness. Most of the HOA communities have great community support that includes 2-way radios.

Dear Community Group,

The City of Sonoma Citizens Disaster Council would like to invite you to a Sonoma community-wide earthquake preparedness drill, part of a Bay Area-wide event called The Big Rumble on Thursday, October 15th at 10:15 am.

What are we being asked to do?

Organize your agency, group, business or neighborhood to participate “in place” as a group, in your location, workplace or clubhouse, in a simulated earthquake drill on October 15th at 10:15 am.  The drill can take as little as 5 minutes, or can be an opportunity to discuss group disaster preparedness and your own plans in the event of a real emergency.  The purpose of the earthquake drill is to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes, and to get prepared at work, school, and home.

How do we register for the event?

Call Debra Rogers, Management Analyst, at 933-2218, to register your group for the event.

How can we find out more information?

Please visit these websites:

http://thebigrumble.org/ is the Big Rumble website.

http://www.shakeout.org/ is The Great Shakeout website.

You are also invited to participate in the Sonoma Citizens Disaster Council meeting on September 10th and November 12th at 3:30pm in the Emergency Operations Center, 175 First Street West, Police Station building.

What do we do on the day of the event, October 15th?

Once you have performed the drill, call in to the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to report your group’s completion of the drill, and let us know how many people participated at your location.  The number to call on October 15th only is 565-7035.  We will ask you for a briefing (60 second update) on your drill and how it went.

Being prepared today can make for a safer tomorrow – the question is not if, regarding The Big One, but when.  We appreciate your participation in The Big Rumble.

The City of Sonoma Citizens Disaster Council has invited the community to participate in earthquake preparedness drills at 10:15am!

Those registered to date include:

Each participating community group will receive a kit which contains a Red Cross personal safety kit to raffle off, raffle tickets, emergency preparedness pocket brochures, "Duck Cover and Hold On" brochure, Disaster Council t-shirt, and Sonoma pencils, all in a Shop Sonoma bag.

The Big Rumble™ Goals

The Big Rumble is dedicated to helping the Bay Area and the state of California become more aware of the risks we face from earthquakes, be informed about what can be done and how we, as a community, can be prepared for future quakes and other natural disasters. We aim to accomplish this by way of three approaches. First is the organization and hosting of a bi-annual event called The Big Rumble Resource Fairs and Block Parties. These are held each October and April around the anniversaries of the Loma Prieta and 1906 quakes and promote community building, awareness, preparedness and information. Second, The Big Rumble partners with cities to promote other preparedness-related events and to share local information with citizens. Finally and most importantly, The Big Rumble provides ongoing readiness tools through its website, preparedness check list, newsletters and other points of contact to help users become and stay prepared for future seismic events in our area. It is our hope that The Big Rumble will become a trusted source of information for Bay Area families and communities.
