The city of San Francisco, gearing up for the Big Rumble, several days of commemorative activities for Oct. 17's 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, has announced an opening-night panel discussion, statewide earthquake drill, various preparedness events and a groundbreaking ceremony on the Marina Green for a memorial in which
neighborhood residents will express gratitude to firefighters who came to their rescue.
That quake was deadly, so all this sounds fitting, but I hope civic ceremonies will include at least a little dancing in the streets (perhaps to the tune of "I Will Survive"). We can thank the quake for a spiffed-up City Hall, an array of new museums, and at least two neighborhoods, Hayes Valley and the Embarcadero, free of freeways, free at last. |
