About

The Bay Area and surrounding communities are some of the most diverse, progressive and forward thinking communities in the world. At the same time, we live in an earthquake prone area where being prepared for an emergency or disaster is important—both for the community as a whole and for your individual residents and their families. The Bay Area takes preparation for hazards seriously. We do this to protect what we love and to help us to survive and recover from emergencies or disasters.

The Big Rumble is a series of events (held in the spring and fall) designed to connect the Bay Area with preparedness resources while commemorating the 1906 Great Earthquake & Fire and the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

Tens of thousands of residents, organizations and businesses across the Greater Bay Area that are already participating. Through local events, social networking, resource tools and a website that is both informative and easy to follow, we are creating a feeling of empowerment and unity throughout the Bay Area community. Residents can access informative and engaging resources and tools, learn and practice new skills, and become more involved and connected members of our community.

Committed 2 Community is honored to have been able to partner with the agencies of the City and County of San Francisco and its community partners to pilot The Big Rumble in its inaugural year of 2009.  City departments with a major role in coordinating the events include the Department of Emergency Management, Department of Public Health, San Francisco Fire Department, and the Office of the City Administrator.

The Big Rumble™ Goals

The Big Rumble is dedicated to helping the Bay Area and the state of California become more aware of the risks we face from earthquakes, be informed about what can be done and how we, as a community, can be prepared for future quakes and other natural disasters. We aim to accomplish this by way of three approaches. First is the organization and hosting of a bi-annual event called The Big Rumble Resource Fairs and Block Parties. These are held each October and April around the anniversaries of the Loma Prieta and 1906 quakes and promote community building, awareness, preparedness and information. Second, The Big Rumble partners with cities to promote other preparedness-related events and to share local information with citizens. Finally and most importantly, The Big Rumble provides ongoing readiness tools through its website, preparedness check list, newsletters and other points of contact to help users become and stay prepared for future seismic events in our area. It is our hope that The Big Rumble will become a trusted source of information for Bay Area families and communities.
