THE BIG RUMBLE – SAN FRANCISCO

20th Anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake

2009 marked the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. The Big Rumble commemorated this anniversary with a week-long series of special events designed to connect our communities with preparedness resources.

In October we came together as a community to learn more about how we can be better prepared for all types of emergencies. Events included entertainment, activities for kids, free giveaways, and valuable preparedness information.

The Big Rumble Would Like to Give a Special Thanks to All of the Talent That Donated Their Time

2PM: Acrosports’ City Circus- http://www.acrosports.org/
4PM: Sony Holland Duo: Bay Area Jazz vocalist- http://www.sonyholland.com/

Sony Holland has done it all, from being a solitary street performer to a center-stage diva with a brassy 17 piece jazz orchestra. Still, catching one of her live performances one gets a feeling that the best is yet to come. Perhaps it’s the way her crystalline voice wraps itself around a lyric and melody in a completely natural and unaffected style... or how she seamlessly infuses her jazzy repertoire with classics, originals and re-imagined contemporary songs. Or it may just be the infectious joy she takes in singing. Born in a tiny town well north of Minneapolis, Ms. Holland has toured Asia, performed in prestigious jazz festivals and in premier nightclubs such as the Blue Note, Yoshi’s, Catalina’s, the Dakota, the Rrazz Room and many more.

Luckily, Chad, the keyboardist, was knowledgeable in earthquake preparedness and calmly guided Rebecca through the seconds-long ideal. Since then, they have written many songs about everything from crosswords puzzles to emotional miniskirts, released an album and an EP, played almost every big city on the West Coast and heard about it when anyone has their first earthquake.]

The Big Rumble™ Goals

The Big Rumble is dedicated to helping the Bay Area and the state of California become more aware of the risks we face from earthquakes, be informed about what can be done and how we, as a community, can be prepared for future quakes and other natural disasters. We aim to accomplish this by way of three approaches. First is the organization and hosting of a bi-annual event called The Big Rumble Resource Fairs and Block Parties. These are held each October and April around the anniversaries of the Loma Prieta and 1906 quakes and promote community building, awareness, preparedness and information. Second, The Big Rumble partners with cities to promote other preparedness-related events and to share local information with citizens. Finally and most importantly, The Big Rumble provides ongoing readiness tools through its website, preparedness check list, newsletters and other points of contact to help users become and stay prepared for future seismic events in our area. It is our hope that The Big Rumble will become a trusted source of information for Bay Area families and communities.
